For the last week my wife and I have been on a road trip back to the UK after spending some time in our beach apartment in Spain.
The roadtrip in total is about 29 hours. Packing, getting the car ready, travelling with our little dog Cara, a japanese Spitz, can all get a little bit hectic.
Such trips, or any other stressful scenarios such as moving house can put a lot of strain on a couple but I wholeheartedly believe that they cannot create new pain, they can only expose already existing pain. Let me explain.
If the connection is strong, if you feel deep safety and trust, then even when you are going through a stressful situation of any sort, the strength of your union will allow you to move through it. However, if there are lurking challenges that have not been addressed, then they will become amplified and exposed.
What I am trying to tell you here is that such stressful moments can be an extremely powerful initiation for couples.
Amidst a moment of tension or stress,
Can you still remain respectful?
Can you still leave your heart open?
Can you still remain patient?
Can you still express your devotion?
Because if the answer is yes then the stressful periods will actually serve as a way of immensely deepening the bond in your relationship. These periods cannot break your relationship, they actually are one of the most powerful ways to teach your nervous system that your relationship is always safe.
Imagine for a moment how it would feel knowing that your relationship is always safe, no matter what external circumstances are happening around us.
But this takes work, it takes courage, it takes your devotion to remain conscious even when you are tired, overwhelmed, or stressed. It creates a fundamental level of unsafety in a relationship when stressful periods cause immense pressure in your relationship.
Stress in life is at times unavoidable, yet the stress and strain it puts on a relationship is perfectly avoidable.
