The Father Wound in Women

The Father Wound in Women

February 28, 2025 //  by Lorin Krenn

For so many women, growing up without a healthy masculine presence has left a deep, lasting imprint.

Maybe the father was physically absent, or perhaps he was there but emotionally unavailable, overly critical, or unpredictable. As a child, this creates an internal reality where safety with men does not exist—where trusting the masculine feels dangerous, naive, or impossible.

A child does not understand that a father’s physical or emotional absence comes from his own unresolved pain. Instead, she perceives it as rejection, internalizing the mistaken belief that she isn’t worthy of his love.

This creates a subconscious cycle of anticipating rejection in men.

Studies show that when someone fears rejection, they are more likely to interpret neutral or unclear behaviors as rejection—even when it’s not intended. This can create tension in the relationship and, over time, lead their partner to actually become more distant or withdrawn. (Downey & Feldman, 1996)

This creates an inner conflict between two deep, opposing desires:

  1. The desire to protect herself from being hurt again.
  2. The desire for deep love, intimacy, and connection.

These two desires collide, and relationships with men feel stressful, anxiety-inducing, unpredictable—swinging from extreme closeness to distance, from longing to fear.

So how do you break this cycle?

The first step is to no longer internalize a man’s rejection, withdrawal, or inconsistency as proof of your worth.

When your self-worth is no longer dictated by a man’s actions, everything changes. You begin to see clearly. You make decisions from self-love rather than fear. You stop emotionally absorbing a man’s behavior as if it defines you.

And this does not only support your own healing. By no longer internalizing a man’s actions, you also give us men the space to process our emotions, to take responsibility, and to show up with integrity. When we are not being pressured to regulate your sense of worth, we have the space to meet you in true presence.

Reflection

How would you show up differently if a man’s actions no longer dictated your self-worth?

This is the beginning of embodying your divine feminine essence. Being rooted in your heart and in your feminine doesn’t mean you are detached—it means you see a man’s behavior for what it is without losing yourself in the storm of emotions.

This is the internal liberation that allows you to trust yourself, attract (or deepen with) a conscious man, and stop repeating the past.
