He lost his brother and ended up in the manosphere

He lost his brother and ended up in the manosphere

March 27, 2026 //  by Lorin Krenn

A few nights ago after watching Louis Theroux’s Manosphere documentary, I had a conversation with my wife that I haven’t been able to stop thinking about since.

There was a man on screen, struggling. He had lost his brother. He was carrying deep grief, clearly suppressed, and he was searching. Searching for identity, for belonging, for a way to feel like a man again. And he had ended up in that world because it was the only world that spoke to what he actually felt inside.

I said to my wife: “If he were in my men’s group, he would learn to access that grief. His heart would open. And from there he would find his real power. But he isn’t. He is instead caught in a web of people who are completely disembodied from the experience he truly seeks.“

I genuinely believe that many men following these influencers are searching for something legitimate. With the right guidance, they would become completely different people. The tragedy is that the guidance they found is hollow – and it found them first.

Here is what the Manosphere understood, and built an empire on:

A man’s primal hungers are not what most of the personal development space tells him they are.

He does not wake up in the morning hungry to “open his heart.” He does not lie awake at night longing to become “emotionally available.” These are real needs and they matter deeply. But they are not the language that reaches him where he actually lives now.

A man’s primal hungers are identity, respect, and power.

And the most effective manipulators in the world know exactly how to speak to all 3.

Think about the man who lost his brother. His grief was a crisis of identity.

Who am I without him? Am I weak for feeling this? Does this make me powerless? Will anyone respect me if I fall apart? How do I hold this and still feel like a man?

Those questions are answered by being initiated into a way of being that can hold all of it, the grief and the strength, the softness and the spine, at the same time.

The manosphere offers a shortcut. Suppress the grief, project dominance, perform power. It speaks directly to the hunger without actually feeding it. And for a man who has never been shown the real thing, a hollow version of what he needs feels like relief.

The language of ‘get in touch with your feelings’ is simply incomplete. It does not meet a man where he is standing.

A man wants to feel powerful. He wants to know that he is not a victim of his circumstances. He wants to walk into a room feeling grounded in who he is.

And here is what very few people will tell him: to access that level of power, he will have to feel everything he has been running from. Not because feelings are the destination, but because they are the doorway. The grief he is suppressing is the exact weight that is keeping him small. The anger he has never integrated is the fire he has never learned to direct. The shame he carries about who he is as a man is the ceiling he keeps hitting.

Real power is what a man becomes when he has moved through all of it with guidance and emerged on the other side.

I have watched this happen hundreds of times. A man comes in thinking the work is about becoming more disciplined, more assertive, more confident with women. And somewhere in the process, something much deeper opens. He grieves something he has been carrying for 20 years. He speaks a truth he has never said out loud. He stands in a circle of men who do not flinch when he shows them what is actually inside him. And from that place, something in his posture changes. His voice changes. The way he inhabits his own life changes.

He is able to access a deeper way of being, a deeper way of embodying himself, his truth.

That is the product of initiation.
