One of the biggest misconceptions is that the divine feminine is all about softness, surrender and light. While these are beautiful traits of the feminine, there exists another side known as the dark feminine.
Dark feminine energy is often symbolised by Kali – who in Hindu mythology is the goddess of destruction, destruction of that which goes against the sacred. I like to refer to the awakened feminine as the gatekeeper of the sacred. The instinct to protect the sacred comes from a place of love, yet at times love has to be fierce. And this is what dark feminine energy is about. It is a raw, unapologetic, and destructive force meant to shake and crumble every untruth there is.
Both men and women fear this ancient side of the awakened feminine. For women it can be very challenging to embody their dark feminine energy, as it triggers their fear of rejection and abandonment, especially with men. For men it often triggers the part within them that wants to unconsciously control or suppress the feminine in order to feel confident and strong – which comes from a wound.
Dark feminine energy is often confused with trauma projection or wounds being expressed by the feminine, while in truth it is part of the nature of the divine feminine. It is an ancient part of love that has been long forgotten. I like to say that the feminine is here to teach us about love, the true nature of love. And dark feminine energy is part of the true nature of love.
As we open ourselves to it, whether we are on the receiving end as the masculine, or as the feminine, we start to connect with the source from where it originates, a place of such love that is willing to risk everything in order to remain in devotion to the highest love and truth. It is an expression of the highest intelligence.
When does it arise?
Dark feminine naturally arises in a woman who allows herself to embody the fullness of her nature when the shadow has become too strong. This is not in particular the shadow of the masculine, it can be, however, the shadow in general.
A practical example: a woman’s dark feminine energy will become active when a man continues to remain stuck in certain patterns and wounds, and declines to take ownership, and refuses to see his part in it. Dark feminine energy is like a wake-up call, a clear, honest, and divine mirror exposing the shadow at the highest level.
A woman cannot have her heart’s deepest longing met if she suppresses her own dark feminine energy, or if her shadow takes over and it no longer comes from a place of love.
