Advice rarely changes a life

Advice rarely changes a life

March 13, 2026 //  by Lorin Krenn

Recently someone in my circle said something that stayed with me.

“It is so hard to explain to people how to change their life. It takes so much energy.”

I noticed the impulse to respond immediately, because that sentence reflects a misunderstanding that appears again and again whenever people try to help others grow.

We tend to believe that if someone simply understands enough, their life will change.

So we explain things. We share insights. We offer advice, tools, and practices, hoping the next idea or the next piece of information will finally make the difference.

Let me be blunt with you: You are WASTING your time and energy.

If you observe people closely, something very simple becomes obvious:

Most people already know far more than they are able to live.

They know the relationship is not healthy for them. They know they should set clearer boundaries. They know they are repeating the same pattern again and again.

The issue is rarely a lack of information.

The deeper difficulty is that the part of them creating the pattern has never truly been met. Their inner world, their circumstances, and their story have never been clearly seen.

Many people spend years collecting insights about their life while the deeper layer shaping their choices remains untouched.

I remember sitting with a man who was highly successful and intelligent. To the outside world, he had built an extraordinary life.

Yet beneath that success he carried creative impulses he kept suppressing. He felt comfortable wearing the identity of the successful business owner. Bringing his creative expression into the world felt far more vulnerable.

Underneath that tension lived a familiar story. That he was not good enough. That people would ultimately reject him.

He had read the books, taken the courses, and spoken with many people.

But within a few conversations something shifted. He removed most distractions in his life and committed fully to the creative work he had avoided for years. Today he is deeply connected to the work that genuinely reflects who he is.

The reason I share this story is simple:

He already had the information he needed.

What he needed was someone willing to enter his inner world, to recognize the deeper pattern shaping his decisions, and to meet him there.

This is where real transformation begins.

When that deeper layer is clearly seen, the tension around the struggle begins to soften. The story someone has repeated for years starts to loosen. From that place a different choice becomes possible.

Over the years I have witnessed this moment again and again.

The shift in someone’s life rarely happens because they finally hear the right piece of information. It happens when the underlying pattern shaping their life becomes visible in a way it never has before.

Anyone who cares deeply about people eventually encounters this moment. A partner trying to understand their relationship. A parent guiding their child. A friend sitting with someone during a difficult time.

The same principle appears again and again.

Real change begins when the deeper pattern is finally seen.

The ability to recognize and meet that layer is the foundation of deep coaching.

After many years of working with people, I began to notice the same underlying pattern beneath many different struggles. Once you learn to recognize that pattern, you can guide someone to the core of what is actually shaping their life.
